Saxton County Maps of England & Wales
Under the auspices of Queen Elizabeth, the Yorkshireman Christopher Saxton (b. 1542) undertook the mammoth task of mapping all the counties of England and Wales.
His superb mapping remained the base for county maps over the succeeding 100 years. Regarded by experts as amongst the most important first surveys of England and Wales, this strikingly decorative series of county maps presents an intriguing portrait of the late 16th century.
Original impressions of Saxton’s engraved maps with their emblazoned coats of arms, stylised cartography, colourful borders and endearing Elizabethan detail are rare and highly prized collectors’ pieces. This edition of fine quality colour reproductions, faithful to the 16th century originals, presents an extraordinary opportunity to own a piece of English history.
