What are postcodes
Originally created by The Royal Mail and adopted in the UK between 1959 - 1974 to make postal delivery work more efficiently. , Postcodes have evolved to form a crucial part of business planning and as an established reference point throughout the United Kingdom.
A valid Postcode is formed using a series of letters and numbers of between 5 and 7 characters, this combination identifies an address or group of houses. A Postal code has two parts, an Outward and Inward code, separated by a space. Each full Postcode contains an average of 15 delivery points.
Postcodes operate at four levels. Take, for example, the Postcode SW18 1AZ
Level 1: Area
The UK is divided 124 postcode areas and each area is identified by the first two letters of the postcode (example SW). Each area has on average 183,000 delivery points. If you are looking for a postcode map to show postcodes at an area level, then please download our Free postcode map. If you are looking for a larger laminated wall map that features more information and detail, then Map Marketing produce the GB Postcode Area Map.
Level 2: District
Each postcode area is then divided into post code districts. The postcode district is made up of the number or numbers that make up the first half of any postcode before the space (example SW18). There are just over 2,900 postcode districts in the UK and on average 21 districts within each postcode area.
As there are so many more postcode districts than areas you have to display these on a much more detailed map. To be able to cover the whole of the country at this level requires a range of six maps. Map Marketing offer a range of six laminated postcode district wall maps that each cover a set area. If you require a specific area, or find that your area covers 2 or more postcode maps we also offer a custom map service, where we can build a bespoke map to suit your exact requirements.
Level 3: Sector
At postcode sector level the district is further broken down into sector postcodes (9,000 in total). These sector postcodes feature the whole first part of a postcode before the space and the first number of the second part of the postcode (example SW18 1). As postcode sectors give you even more detail that the district postcodes it requires an even larger range of maps to cover the country in more detail. Our range of postcode sector wall maps, including a London postcode map can be found in our postcode sector map section.
Level 4: Units
Unit postcodes pinpoints a group of houses or addresses. Some organisations are allocated a unique Postcode to ensure the segregation of large deliveries of mail to a single address. This level of postcode is far too detailed to be able produce a range of maps, there are over 1.8 million unit postcodes that cover approximately 29 million address across the country.
